Boston school assignment vote will end 'walk-zone preference'

The Boston School Committee on Wednesday voted to change how children throughout Boston are assigned to city schools in a move that will likely benefit some neighborhoods to the detriment of others.The Boston Globe reports the new school assignment system puts an end to so-called "walk-zone preference," which gives priority to students and families who live within one mile of a desired school.The new system, set to take effect in the fall of 2014, sets up an algorithm that does away with the…
